I’ve had several people come up to me and ask, “What’s the deal with seeds?” and “Why are they so good for me?” Nuts and seeds in general are good for your health because they contain many micronutrients and are considered a good source of fiber and protein. Here I've given you
a quick 1-2-3 on a few of the more popular seeds out there.

Flax seeds - a good source of omega-3 fats, which provide cardiovascular benefits and great heart healthy effects. Flax seeds are an excellent source of fiber and they help to regulate cholesterol, blood glucose, and digestion. Some believe flax seeds are a cancer protectant for certain types of cancer such as breast and prostate, because they contain lignans which are phytoestrogens that help to regulate our own estrogen production.

Sesame seeds - another good source of fiber, which aids in our digestive health, and another rich source of lignans. Sesame seeds are high in phytosterols, which aid in fighting heart disease. Sesame seeds are also a good source in managing diabetes and hypertension, and their high zinc content is excellent in boosting bone health.

Chia seeds - a rich source of omega-3 fats, which provide excellent heart healthy effects and protects us against heart disease. Chia seeds are also rich in micronutrients that promote bone health and blood sugar control, as well as they are a good source of fiber, which aids in our digestive health.

Hemp seeds - (one of my faves) an excellent source of protein, and especially good for vegans and vegetarians. Hemp seeds contain 20 different amino acids (the building blocks of protein) including all 9 essential amino acids (flax seeds too!). A good source of fiber, which aids in digestion and lowering cholesterol. Hemp seeds contain trace minerals and vitamin E, strengthens the immune system, and contains lignans which are believed to protect us against certain types of cancer including breast, colon and prostate.
Seeds are fun to incorporate in your diet. I mix and match all the time and sprinkle them on just about everything. Chia seed pudding with fruit is a staple in our home, and all kinds of seed crackers, muffins, and protein/energy bites!

Let me know how you use seeds in your meal plan, or if you'd like me to post a few recipes that include the wonderful bounty of SEEDS!
